The endocannabinoid system was unknown until the 1990s. Research revealed that the human body produces its own cannabinoids called endogenous cannabinoids, or endocannabinoids. This was the initial identification of a vast biological regulatory system that is present in all mammalian vertebrates known as the Endocannabinoid System. Endocannabinoids are signaling molecules that help regulate various processes, such as pain, memory, mood, immunity, and stress. Cannabinoids stimulate cell receptors and produce various reactions, depending on the location of the cells and the receptors. Cannabinoids come from two sources: either produced naturally by the body (endocannabinoids) or from cannabis sativa and hemp plants (phytocannabinoids).

The endocannabinoid system is made up of two key receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors affect motor and cognitive functions. CB2 receptors play a role in neuroprotection and neuroinflammation. They accept cannabinoid molecules like a lock and key, which in turn influences one or more bodily processes, such as those related to anxiety, appetite, metabolism, mood, pain sensation, and sleep. Endocannabinoid compounds activate receptors in the immune system, brain, glands, organs, and muscles. The purpose of the endocannabinoid system is to bring the body into balance or homeostasis, regardless of environmental and external disturbances.

  • CBD affects CB1 receptors
  • CBN affects CB2 receptors

Typically administered in the form of oils, treats, or capsules, CBD for pets is believed to offer various health benefits. These may include alleviating anxiety and stress, reducing pain and inflammation, improving joint mobility, supporting digestive health, and enhancing overall comfort and quality of life for animals.

CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in both humans and animals, helping to regulate various physiological functions and promote homeostasis. While research on the specific effects of CBD in pets is ongoing, anecdotal evidence and preliminary studies suggest promising results.

When considering CBD for pets, it’s crucial to choose high-quality products specifically formulated for animals and to follow dosing guidelines provided by veterinarians or reputable manufacturers. Additionally, consulting with a veterinarian before starting CBD therapy for a pet is recommended to ensure it’s appropriate and safe for their individual needs and conditions.
